In both yoga and Ayurveda, the concept of chakras holds significant importance, representing the energetic centers within the body. These centers are believed to influence physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and understanding them can deepen our yoga practice and overall sense of balance. At Yoga Ashram, chakra awareness is woven into our daily retreat schedule — from the sequencing of morning yoga to the tones chosen during sound healing.
What Are Chakras?
Chakras, meaning “wheels” or “circles” in Sanskrit, are spinning energy centers located along the central axis of the body, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. The study and knowledge of the chakras spans centuries and practices, from various yoga to Buddhism to Jainism schools of thought, and they are used for a variety of purposes, starting with understanding our energy body, and the connection between our physical and energy body. In yoga and Ayurveda, it is understood that there are seven main chakras (though many more in total), each associated with specific qualities, elements, colors, sounds, and areas of life. Chakras are the focal points of pran, the universal life force and energy in the body.
In Yoga, chakras are considered fundamental knowledge. Each yoga pose or asana corresponds to at least one chakra. In a well-rounded yoga class, we may touch upon all seven of them. A grounding morning session might activate the root and sacral chakras, while a heart-opening evening practice emphasizes the heart center. Beyond asana, pranayama (breathwork) and meditation techniques are often rooted in specific chakra work.
In Ayurveda, chakras are related to understanding not only the physical body but also the energetic anatomy — a bridge between all five layers or koshas: the physical, energy, mental-emotional, intellectual, and spiritual bodies. Knowledge of the chakras informs both diagnostic understanding and treatment approaches.
At Yoga Ashram, practices that activate and balance the chakras are part of daily life. Sound healing meditation — where each singing bowl is attuned to specific chakra frequencies — is one of our most beloved evening practices. Mudras (hand gestures), mantra chanting, and energy healing practices such as Reiki also work directly with the chakra system.

Why Chakra Awareness Matters on Retreat
Understanding and balancing the chakras can help bring harmony to our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. When energy flows freely through each chakra, we experience vitality, balance, and well-being. On retreat, this awareness becomes more than theory — it becomes felt experience.
Our sound healing sessions are attuned to chakra frequencies. Our yoga classes are sequenced to move energy upward through the system. Our Ayurvedic meals support the physical foundations that allow subtle energy to flow. And our jungle environment — rich with natural vibration, negative ions, and silence — creates the ideal container for chakra work to go deeper than it typically can in urban settings.
Many guests report feeling “energetically rearranged” by day three of a retreat. That sensation is often the result of blocked or stagnant energy beginning to move — a shift in the chakra system that manifests as better sleep, emotional release, sudden clarity, or a sense of lightness that persists long after departure.
