Golden Milk (Haldi Doodh) for Deep Sleep | Yoga Ashram Costa Rica

In the quiet stillness of evening, there is perhaps no ritual more grounding than preparing a warm mug of Golden Milk, or Haldi Doodh. This ancient Ayurvedic elixir has been used for millennia not just for its vibrant color, but for its profound ability to soothe the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and prepare the body for deep, restorative sleep.

At Yoga Ashram, we often recommend a cup of golden milk after a busy day of travel, after a sound healing session, or before bedtime to help the body shift from doing into resting. It is simple, comforting, and deeply nourishing.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of milk (dairy, almond, coconut, or oat milk all work beautifully)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey or maple syrup (optional, add after cooling slightly)
  • 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil or ghee

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine the milk, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and coconut oil (or ghee).
  2. Warm Gently: Whisk the mixture over medium-low heat. Bring it to a gentle simmer, but avoid a rolling boil to preserve the nutrients.
  3. Infuse: Let the mixture simmer for about 5–10 minutes, whisking occasionally.
  4. Cool and Sweeten: Remove from heat and allow it to cool to a drinkable temperature. If using honey, add it now.
  5. Serve: Pour into your favorite mug and sip slowly, ideally 30-60 minutes before bed.

Why It Works

Turmeric is the star of the recipe, but the real magic is in the combination: warming spices, healthy fat, and a ritualized pause at the end of the day. Cinnamon helps with warmth and balance, ginger supports digestion, and black pepper helps the body absorb turmeric more easily.

In retreat life, sleep matters as much as practice. A body that sleeps deeply can integrate, heal, and restore. Golden milk is one of the easiest ways to signal to the nervous system that it is safe to rest.

When to Drink It

Sip golden milk when you feel wired but tired, after a long day, or as part of a bedtime routine. It is especially useful during travel or after an intensive retreat when your system is still processing a lot of change.

If you want to experience this kind of nourishment in a fully supported setting, our Reset Retreat includes evening practices designed to prepare the body for deep rest.

A Simple Nightly Ritual

Golden milk is a small practice that can make a big difference in how deeply you rest.
