You have never surfed. Maybe you have never even stood on a board. And now you are considering a surf and yoga retreat in Costa Rica — a place famous for waves, warm water, and the pura vida lifestyle.
🌊 Here is the truth:
You do not need experience. Our surf and yoga retreats are specifically designed for beginners. In fact, guests who have never surfed often have the best experience because they arrive without bad habits, expectations, or fear.
This guide walks you through exactly what to expect — from your first wave attempt to your final sunset session — so you can arrive excited rather than anxious.

🧘 Before You Arrive: The Mindset
Surfing is not about performance. It is about relationship — with the ocean, with your body, and with the present moment. The best surfers are not the strongest or the most athletic. They are the most patient, the most observant, and the most willing to fail gracefully.
🏋️ What You Think You Need
- Upper body strength
- Gym fitness
- Athletic background
- Fearlessness
🧘 What You Actually Need
- Breath awareness
- Body control (hello, yoga)
- Patience with yourself
- Curiosity, not perfection
Your yoga practice supports this. The balance, breath awareness, and body control you develop on the mat translate directly to the board. Many guests are surprised to find that their yoga background helps them more than gym strength ever would.
🌅 Day 1: Ocean Introduction
🌄 Morning: Beach Yoga
Open the hips, stretch the shoulders, and prepare the body for paddling. We focus on core stability and spinal rotation — the two physical foundations of surfing.
🏄 Afternoon: First Surf Lesson
We begin on the sand: board anatomy, safety protocols, how to fall (yes, this is a skill), and the pop-up technique. Then we enter the water in the white water — the broken waves near shore.
🌙 Evening: Restorative Yoga
Release the shoulders, lower back, and hips. Paddling uses muscles most people do not train. The evening practice prevents soreness and prepares you for day two.
✨ Most beginners stand up for the first time within the first hour. It is not elegant. It does not need to be. The feeling of riding your first wave — even for two seconds — is unforgettable.
🌊 Day 2: Paddling and Positioning
🌄 Morning: Yoga for Surfers
Sequences that strengthen the paddling muscles (shoulders, back, core) while maintaining flexibility.
🏄 Afternoon: Lesson Two
Paddling technique and wave selection. You learn to read the ocean: where waves break, where currents flow, and how to position yourself. By the end of this session, most beginners are consistently standing up and riding white water to shore.
🌙 Evening: Optional Massage
Your shoulders will thank you.

🏄 Day 3: Riding Green Waves
🌄 Morning: SUP Yoga
Stand-up paddleboard yoga on calm water develops the proprioception and core strength that surfing demands.
🏄 Afternoon: Green Waves
This is where it gets exciting. Your instructor introduces you to green waves — unbroken waves that require timing and positioning. You will not catch many. You may not catch any. But the attempt teaches you more about the ocean than any book ever could.
🔥 Evening: Beach Bonfire
Surfing creates a unique bond. The struggles, the victories, and the shared salt water make for natural community.
🎉 Day 4: Integration and Celebration
🌄 Morning: Final Surf Session
A celebration of your progress. By now, you are not just trying to stand up. You are reading waves, adjusting your position, and beginning to feel the ocean’s rhythm.
🦜 Afternoon: Nature Tour
Costa Rica’s Pacific coast offers incredible biodiversity. Depending on the season, you may see sea turtles, dolphins, or tropical birds.
🙏 Evening: Closing Ceremony
Gratitude practice. You leave with sand in your hair, salt on your skin, and a new relationship with the ocean.
🛡️ Safety: What Beginners Need to Know
👨🏫 Certified Instructors
Our instructors know how to read conditions, manage group safety, and teach progressive skills without pressure.
🏖️ Beginner Beaches
Sandy bottoms, consistent white water, and minimal reef or rock hazards.
🏄 Matched Equipment
Soft-top boards, appropriate leashes, and rash guards — included and sized for you.
🌊 Daily Assessment
If surf is too big or too flat, we adapt the schedule. You are never pushed beyond your comfort.
🌴 What If the Surf Is Flat?
We monitor conditions daily. If the surf is flat, we substitute with:
- ✓SUP yoga on calm water
- ✓Beach yoga and mobility work
- ✓Nature tours and wildlife viewing
- ✓Extra restorative practices and massage
- ✓Theory sessions on wave reading and ocean safety
🌿 The retreat is designed to flow with nature, not fight it.
